PROPHYLAXIS FOR TOXOPLASMOSIS

  • TMP/SMX given as prophylaxis for PCP also protects against Toxoplasma.
  • There is no need for routine primary Toxoplasma prophylaxis in an HIV infected child as it is quite rare in children.
  • Secondary prophylaxis is recommended life long after the child has been treated for toxoplasmosis.
  • Safety of discontinuation of primary or secondary prophylaxis is HIV infected children receiving ART has not been proven.

Drug & Dosage for of TMP-SMX for primary prophylaxis

Drugs Dosage
TMP/SMX 150 mg of TMP m2/day PO BD on alternate day
5 mg/kg of TMP/day PO HS daily
