A 5 month old female child was diagnosed as tuberculous meningitis (TBM) with cavitatory tuberculosis (TB). Gastric lavage for acid fast bacillus was positive on smear. CT chest revealed multiple nodular opacities scattered all over lung parenchyma predominantly in basal and sub-pleural region. Right upper lobe showed a thick walled cavity associated with consolidation in the posterior segment. She was treated with 4 drug antituberculous therapy (ATT) consisting of Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Pyrazinamide & Ethambutol along with steroids.
Why did the child have cavitatory TB at 5 months of age?
