GRAND ROUNDS
A 6 month old boy born to HIV infected parents was referred for further treatment. Mother was diagnosed to be HIV infected in 5 month of gestation and was on Zidovudine (AZT) since then for next 4 months. Baby was delivered by an elective caesarean section and was put on Zidovudine (AZT) 2 mg/day/dose qds. Breast feeds were withheld. AZT in baby was continued for 6 months. Milestones were normal. On examination, child was well nourished, had pallor and mild hepatomegaly. Other systems were normal.
What is the ideal duration of AZT in this baby? What are the side effects with AZT?
