GRAND ROUNDS
An 11 year old girl born to HIV infected parents was referred for HIV testing. She had a younger sister who was also HIV infected (diagnosed in view of bilateral parotid enlargement). The patient herself had never been tested for HIV. She had no problems and was asymptomatic. On examination, she was normal. Her HIV ELISA was done which was negative.
How is it that one sister is HIV infected and the other sister is negative?
