An 11 year old girl was referred for further management. She was born to an HIV infected mother. Mother was diagnosed with AIDS following birth of second child and died immediately afterwards. The girl was tested for HIV at that time when she was 1 year old and was found to be HIV positive. However, no further tests or treatment were done in this child. Her brother was recently diagnosed to be HIV infected and she was thus referred for HIV testing. She had pulmonary tuberculosis at 5 years of age for which she received antituberculous therapy (ATT) for 6 months. On examination, she was normal. Systemic examination was normal. HIV ELISA done at present time was negative which was reconfirmed.
Why was HIV ELISA positive at 1 year of age in this child?
